You won’t be born to me. . . . I know. . . . What I think is impossible. .
And you’re just my unborn son. . And I’m your mother. .
But we can talk to you. . I’m going to tell you, and you listen. . . .
Someday. . . after. . . you will answer me. . . .
You will be born. . . Not to me, of course. . . to another woman. . . .
The one who won’t talk to you. . . . She won’t think of you as a son. . .
Just a child, that’s all. . . .
So you can be mine. . . As well. . . .
So it will be. .
And I will wait. . . I will wait for you to be born and grow up. . . .
You will hear our voices. . .
They will be quite quiet. . . and it is difficult to hear them when you think not about us. . . .
But we believe. . . .
He thought of her as he looked up at the sky. . . . Half the sky was covered by a huge planet, it was very close and an island in the middle of the sea was visible. . . It looked like an island in the middle of the sea. . . . He couldn’t see anything else. . . Just a big rocky island. . . probably rocky. . . . There are black hills and that’s it. . . . He knew there were people there, too. . .
Like him. . . . Like the one he loved. . . .
It was a long time ago. He was a boy when this girl was taken away. . He never saw her again. . . And he didn’t want to see the others. . . .
He didn’t remember his parents. . . They were killed or taken prisoner. . . I don’t know. . . . He lived alone. . .
He was hiding in the woods. . . He was picking up things to eat. .
He came across a dead man once. . . he was lying in the bushes. . . . He took his knife and ran away. . . then he came back and took off his shoes and what he was wearing. . . .
Everything was good. . . strong. .
In these clothes, he could go out to people. . . to some settlement. . . .
Maybe they wouldn’t have sent him away. . . . But he didn’t want to humiliate himself and ask. . .
Better to be alone in the woods. . . .
Then, in other settlements, everyone was killed or taken prisoner. . . he went to collect what was left in the burned houses. . Sometimes he managed to find a whole pot or a broken weapon. . . he never found the undamaged one. . . . Looking at broken things he learned to fix them. . . Then he made it himself. . . . It wasn’t worse than the founded one. .
He thought that he would be able to defend himself and would not surrender alive. .
That night he heard. . . – no, rather felt – someone is calling him. . In a dream. . .
Or almost in a dream. . . When he started to fall asleep. . . .
He knew, realized at once, that it was a girl. . . . She’s alone. . . She’s got no one, they were all killed, too. . .
And she is now looking from that planet. . . that island. . . at his planet. . . .
She likes it. . . It is blue. . . with clouds. . . . She says she can hear what he’s thinking and wants to tell that she is waiting for him. . . .
It’s impossible. . . . She knows. . . . But she will always wait for him. . . . Forever. .
He thought it can’t be. . . It’s just a dream. . .
Then he was waiting for her voice. . . at nights. . . . And she was talking again. . . .
She said she liked to listen to his thoughts and see through his eyes what he was doing. During the day, he simply does not hear her, and she is near. . . and sees everything. . . .
She also said that they would all be killed soon. . . . That’s what the Law says. . . .
But she would still be with him. . . Even after the death. . . Forever. .
Then the voice trailed off and he saw Her. . . for a moment. . . .
And he could never forget her eyes. . . .
Now he knew what he wanted most of all. . . .
He imagined that a large boat would come down from the sky and take him away. . They will fly to that planet where the island is made of black stones. . . She’ll be there. .
She understood his thoughts and smiled faintly through her torn mouth. . . The blood flowed even harder. . . .
These saw the smile and went wild with anger. . . .
That night she was finished off. .
The silver boat was hanging above the ground. . . Just as he had imagined it. . .
The door opened. . . He entered it. . . He knew what it would be like. . . And so it was. . .
He lay down on the white floor and closed his eyes. .
He woke up to the smell of something hot and hostile. . . The door was open. . . He stepped onto the black stones. . . .
Hot air and grayish sky. . . His planet is right overhead. . . . He had never thought that it is so beautiful. . . .
He knew where to go. . How did he know? He just knew. . He knew that there would be a valley down the slope, and beyond that a dry sea. . . He knew that her home would be ahead. . . What’s left of the house. . . He knew she wasn’t there anymore. . . But he must go and see. . . This place. .
He came down the hill… The roofless house stood aside. . . .
Others with roofs could be seen in the distance. .
He didn’t go inside. . . He knew, . . . what was inside. . . He sat down on a large stone in front of the house and put his face in his hands. .
He saw with his eyes closed what happened then. . . and then. . . .
He knew These would come in the morning. . . .
They saw the silver boat on the hill. . . They were afraid to leave their houses. .
When These came, he didn’t even get up. . . He just sat there. . . He was looking at them. . . . He was looking at the one in front. . . . He is tall. . . He is very strong, probably. . . Beautiful clothes. . . .
There were many of them. . . With weapons. . . . The first one stopped ten paces away. . . He silently ordered the others to tie up the newcomer. . He ordered with a thought. .
They tied him up. . To make it more comfortable to knit, they knocked him down from a stone to the ground, they were kicking him for a long time, pinned face down and tied his hands behind their backs. . On his feet they made fetters so that he could walk himself and kicked him up from the ground. . There are ropes on his neck. . . two hold in the stretch. . .
Tied up, he couldn’t walk very well. . . They beat him to go faster, but faster he fell. . .
Then they kicked him up again. . . He was silent and they beat even more angrily. . . .
The first one was walking on the side and smiled wryly. . . .
He didn’t become a slave. . . . He didn’t do what These wanted. .
So they beat him all the time and he could hardly move. . . For this they beat again. . . .
He died on the third day. . . Earthlings aren’t as resilient as we are. .
But he knew he’d done the right thing. . . He was with Her now. . . .
Until the next life. . . .
Back then I thought that maybe in the next life you will be born to me. .
From him. . . My Beloved. . . . I thought so. . . .
You’ll still be born. . That’s how the Universe works. Only someone else must really want it. . I know who. . . But that’s not possible. . . It is almost impossible. . . .
Now you know it too. . .
